I quess to some this old pickup looks like a old wore out truck ,just a throw away but this truck is a truck of many adventures .. It was owned by my grandad Harold Coy Bastin a working man of Perry Co Tenn, a husband, dad, and best grandad in the world or at least my world also he was a barber, raised cows ,bought and sold land ,Johnnys partner at checkers ,fisherman ,good friend, best swinger you could swing with he knew how to make it where it was just like the wind blowing you
The keys to the truck that is in the picture at the bottom corner it is a Falstaff key chain with a silver piece the silver piece says Fatwoods Tenn.1926 .Grandad was raised in Flatwoods area his parents home was over on on Sinking Creek ..Im not sure how he and My grandmother meet but im glad they did .I think it was at a dance .
Grandad bought this truck a1956 Chevy at Hohenwald TN.from Kittrell’s. ,I had my solo drive in a cow field in the summer of 1962 it is by the Buffalo River the corner lot on the left when you turn on old fairgrounds rd. but now I had been driving since I was a little girl sitting in granddads lap ..I would hold on to the gear shift making sure I didnt miss getting to shift it when he did ..I learned how to be considerate of others by putting my arm out to let others know we was turning it didnt stretch to far We took driving serious we would go pretty slow on those old country roads as there was many sites to see on our travels ..but this time it was just me and the truck . As I was driving on my solo drive Johnny and Dicky was trying to ride a cow her name was Squeaky she didnt put up with much but they kept trying .. Oh me what a glourious day that was they finally stayed on that cow and I drove solo I felt what freedom was even as a child I knew that a truck meant freedom and the adventures yet to come .. ……once my brother Johnny and I was on the tail gate riding as my grandaddy drove that slow country cruise I had my foot dragging and grandaddy run over a snake I promise you I never dragged my foot again ..we checked on the cows in this truck ,it took me and gmother to church only if it was raining ,as she liked to walk better, took us to town on Saturdays . When I was there it was my job to set on the porch and wait till I saw the truck on hwy 13 and then go tell grandmother when I saw granddaddy and the truck then I would go meet him and get to ride on the side back .,this old pickup carried lots of fish back from the buffalo, this truck helped neighbors took people to the hospital when need be and three of the happiest little kids you ever did see ..they always would tell us to sit down and not get up ..although when gdad had the gates on it we got to stand up oh the freedom this little work truck brought us. Many of adventures stopped on May 26th 1964 but in those 9 short years we made memories to last a life time ..I never forgot him or the truck the best grandad in the world.
