Memories Made for Me.. I know this lady needs some fixing up she is a work in progress .In the back of the house there was a hall and grandmother had a couch and a chair in it and a buffet that she would put her lye soap to cool off in the summer ..there was a window in the back when you raised it it would let a cool breeze in sometimes we set here and I would stand behind granddaddy and brush his hair.. But we mainly use the porch swing for our living room in the summer…granddaddy usually sat on the left side of the swing and grandmom would sit in the chair by the door..
granddaddy would always ask me if I knew how horses got sugar and I would always say yes… He would smile and I would laugh. It’s where I got my first taste of Bull of the Woods ..Apple flavor sitting on the swing..I didn’t keep it long. it is also where granddaddy died ..my best friend who taught me to drive in a 56 Chevy ..I can only remember him being upset 3 times ,once was when I fell thru the ice in the cow field .. .
Grandmother Bastin was a great storyteller she would tell all kinds of spooky stories at night she always in her chair and us in the swing ..
The swing was Johnny and Granddaddy’s favorite checker playing spot.. Granddaddy always in the swing and Johnny would pull up a chair in front of the swing .. I found their old checkerboard and 2 checkers was missing out of it… They didn’t carry on much talking during their checker game and I couldn’t wait for them to get done with the game so me and Johnny could get on with our adventures, but they always took their sweet time.. probably couldn’t find better friends than Johnny and Grandaddy, unless it was Dicky and Granddaddy Averett.. and that is another story .
I hear people say I can’t go back home but that’s not true for me I can go home anytime I want… I just remember those people that loved me when I didn’t know what love was…Thank you to my grandparents .. Mr. and Mrs. CW Averett, Mr.and Mrs. Harold Coy Bastin,Mr. and Mrs.Jessie Andrew Averett, and Mrs.Emma ( Tom) Taylor Rainey and Mom & Dad
How do horses get sugar?? Can you say what the other two times were that your Gdaddy got upset with you? I had to read this 3 times to let it all sink in! Enjoy your childhood stories so much!!
He would always grab my knee and squeeze it and that is how a horse gets sugar….the other time he got upset …was when my brother told me and my other brother if we would go over the hill we would find our mother …well we did and got lost for a while..when we told grandaddy what happened Johnny got in big trouble.. the last time he wasnt really upset just teaching me a lesson when I would ride on the back of the truck I was letting my foot drag and he drug it over a snake..I never did drag it again…I was blessed
Yes, I agree with everyone, that your stories are most Awesome and very enjoyable for me, as well. Your stories represent Good Memories of a time in your Life when times were simpler and just sharing your Grandparents Life and the way they would enjoy their grandchildren.
As you share, then it brings back Good Memories of my own grandparents and how they would share their Life with their grands (I was the oldest grand).
As you know, Elliot, our first grand has arrived 8 months ago, so now I have the opportunity to start making Good Memories for him as he grows up.
Life is Grand and it is so neat to see how life can always com back around in a Full Circle!
Please keep on writing and sharing your stories.
